(Even If You’re New to Collecting!)

There’s something incredibly special about bringing a piece of original art into your home. It’s more than just decor—it’s a reflection of your story, your experiences, and the emotions that resonate with you. If you’ve ever wanted to start an art collection but weren’t sure where to begin, I want to share a few thoughts on how to choose pieces that feel personal, meaningful, and right for you.

Why Collect Original Art?

Original artwork carries an energy that prints and mass-produced pieces simply can’t replicate. It holds the brushstrokes, the layers, the artist’s hands at work. It’s one-of-a-kind, just like you. And when you collect a piece, you’re not just buying art—you’re inviting a story into your home, one that will evolve alongside you over time.

For me, my paintings are deeply tied to the landscapes and emotions of New Brunswick and Atlantic Canada—the quiet beauty of the coastline, the softness of fog rolling in, the ever-changing colors of the sky. I paint to capture that feeling of calm, of being grounded in nature, and to create a sense of peace for the spaces my work finds its way into.

When you collect original art, you’re choosing something that speaks to your story. Maybe it reminds you of home, of a place you long to visit, or of a feeling you want to hold onto. Whatever it is, the right piece will bring something meaningful into your life every time you look at it.

How to Choose the Right Artwork

If you’re new to collecting, start with what draws you in. Art is personal, and there’s no right or wrong way to choose a piece. Here are a few things to consider:

  • What emotions does the piece bring up for you? Do you feel a sense of calm, nostalgia, inspiration?
  • Does it remind you of a place, a memory, or a season of life? Art has a way of holding onto stories, and the right piece will feel like a part of yours.
  • Does it fit into your space—and more importantly, your life? Art doesn’t have to “match” your decor. Instead, think about how it complements your environment and enhances the feeling you want in your home.

Building Your Collection Over Time

Starting an art collection doesn’t mean buying everything at once. Some of the most meaningful collections are built slowly, piece by piece, over years. Choose what speaks to you, and let your collection evolve naturally. One day, you’ll look around and realize your space is filled with artworks that tell your story, each one bringing something special to your home.

The Beauty of a Shared Story

One of my favorite things about creating art is knowing that my pieces find homes with people who feel connected to them. In many ways, collecting art is about sharing stories—mine as the artist, and yours as the collector. When you bring a piece into your home, you’re carrying forward a little bit of the land, the seasons, and the emotions that inspired it.

So if you’ve been thinking about starting your collection, start with what you love. Trust your instincts. And know that the right piece will always find its way to you. ✨

With love,
Emily
