From Passion to Profit: How Pottery Changed My Life (And How It Could Change Yours Too)

If someone had told me a few years ago that my love for pottery would one day turn into a full-fledged business, I probably would’ve laughed! But here I am, living proof that a simple passion can transform into something bigger than I ever imagined. Pottery didn’t just change my creative life—it changed everything. And the best part? It could do the same for you.

In this post, I’m going to share my personal pottery success story and how I went from a curious beginner to running my own pottery business. Whether you’re dreaming of turning pottery into a side hustle or even a full-time gig, I’ll break down the small steps that helped me get there. Spoiler: You don’t need a fancy studio or years of experience to start selling pottery—just a love for the craft and the willingness to take the leap.

My Journey: From Hobby Potter to Business Owner

It all started with a spark of curiosity. I’d always loved the look and feel of handmade pottery—there’s something about the uniqueness and imperfect beauty of each piece that had me hooked. So, I decided to give it a try. At first, it was purely a creative outlet. I had no formal training, no special equipment, just a small corner of my garage, some clay, and the desire to see what I could make.

I’ll be honest, my early pieces weren’t perfect, but I LOVED the process. There was something so calming about shaping clay with my hands, experimenting with glazes, and creating something totally unique from start to finish. And as I kept practicing, my skills improved, and so did my confidence.

Then something interesting happened: people started to notice. Friends and family were asking if they could buy my pieces, and before I knew it, I was getting requests for custom orders. That’s when I realized—maybe this could be more than just a hobby.

Turning Pottery Into a Business

Turning pottery into a business didn’t happen overnight, and it definitely didn’t require a huge investment or fancy equipment. I started small, building my confidence and learning as I went. Here are a few of the key steps that helped me turn my pottery passion into a business:

1. Start Selling What You Love to Make

At the beginning, I made pieces that I loved to make. It wasn’t about following trends or trying to please everyone—it was about creating pottery that felt like me. This authenticity resonated with others and helped me attract my first customers. The key was to start small: selling to friends, family, and eventually expanding to local markets.

2. Learn the Basics of Selling Online

Once I had a few pieces I was proud of, I decided to dip my toes into the online world. I set up a simple website and started sharing my pottery on social media. I had no idea what I was doing at first, but I learned along the way. You don’t have to be a marketing expert or have a huge following to start selling pottery online—just show up, be consistent, and let your passion shine through.

3. Build an Audience by Sharing Your Story

People don’t just buy products—they buy stories. One of the most powerful things I did early on was share my journey. I took my followers behind the scenes, showing them my studio setup (aka the garage!), my process, and even my mistakes. This not only helped me connect with my audience but also built trust. People want to support artists who are real and relatable—don’t be afraid to share your story!

4. Don’t Be Afraid to Price for Profit

This was a big one for me. Like many artists, I struggled with pricing my work at first. I felt guilty charging what my pottery was worth. But if you want to turn pottery into a business, it’s important to value your time and skills. Remember, you’re not just selling a piece of pottery—you’re selling your craftsmanship, your creativity, and the hours you’ve put into learning and perfecting your art.

How Pottery Changed My Life

Fast forward to today, and pottery is no longer just a hobby—it’s a huge part of my business. I’ve gone from making pieces for fun to selling out collections and filling custom orders. Pottery has allowed me to not only express my creativity but also generate income and build a community of people who love handmade art.

More than that, pottery has given me freedom. The freedom to work on my own terms, be my own boss, and pursue a creative career that lights me up every single day. And the best part? I get to share that same possibility with others—like you!

How Pottery Could Change Your Life Too
